Membership/ Compare
Same work.
Three ways to pay.
Most products get built by an agency on a project basis or by a team you hire. Here is how a Hermoso membership compares on cost, speed and flexibility, using published industry figures.
Prefer a fixed-scope project? We take those too. Tell us about it.
01 / At a glance
What you’re
really choosing.
Hermoso membership
- How you pay
- One flat monthly price, set by how many requests are in progress
- What it costs
- $6,000, $12,000 or $20,000 a month
- Getting started
- A one-time setup of about one to two weeks per product; a Blueprint counts toward it
- When priorities change
- Reorder the queue at any time. The price doesn't change
- After launch
- Keep going, step down to Maintain, or pause
- Scaling up or down
- Change tiers month to month (Partner has a 3-month minimum)
- Skills on hand
- A senior team: web on every tier, iOS and Android by tier or add-on, design as an add-on
Project-based agency
- How you pay
- A fixed bid or hourly; U.S. senior developers bill $125–250+ an hour3
- What it costs
- $40,000–120,000 for an MVP; $120,000–300,000 for a mid-size product3
- Getting started
- Proposals, scoping and a contract before work begins
- When priorities change
- Work outside the agreed scope is usually quoted again
- After launch
- The project ends; support is a separate contract
- Scaling up or down
- A new project and a new quote
- Skills on hand
- Whatever the agency staffs the project with
In-house team
- How you pay
- Salaries, benefits, recruiting, equipment and tools
- Getting started
- Weeks to months per hire, plus a recruiter's fee of 15–30% of first-year salary5, then onboarding
- When priorities change
- Flexible, but limited to the skills you've hired
- After launch
- The team stays on payroll whether or not there's work
- Scaling up or down
- Hiring, or letting people go
- Skills on hand
- Only the roles you've hired
02 / Example: a web app MVP
Getting to
a first launch.
A first version of a web product, built and live in production.
Hermoso membership
$24,000
fixed · 6 weeks
Launch Sprint at a fixed price, then two months of Maintain at no charge.
Afterwards, keep building on a tier or keep it running on Maintain.
Project-based agency
$40,000–120,0003
2–4 months
Typical U.S. agency range for an MVP or simple project.
Changes beyond the agreed scope are usually quoted separately, and support after launch is a new contract.
03 / Example: a year of product work
Two things
always moving.
An established product with a steady roadmap: two pieces of work in progress every week, all year.
Membership · Scale
$144,000
a year, month to month
$12,000 a month for two requests in progress across up to three products, on web and iOS, with hosting and a monthly architecture review.
Prepay the year and it's $120,000: two months free.
In-house team
a year, two developers
Two median-paid developers with benefits, plus $41,000–81,500 to recruit them5.
Design, hosting, on-call and senior architecture are extra roles or extra work.
Agency, billed hourly
$480,000–960,0003
a year, two senior developers
Two U.S. senior developers at $125–250 an hour, 160 hours a month each: $40,000–80,000 a month.
Most agencies scope work as projects, so a year usually means several contracts.
These examples assume each option delivers a similar amount of work. Real teams, agencies and projects vary, and a Blueprint gives you an estimate for your own product.
04 / An honest answer
Each has
its place.
Choose a membership
- You have a steady stream of work, not one fixed project
- Priorities change and you want to reorder freely
- You want senior skills across platforms without hiring for each
Choose a fixed-scope project
- The scope is set and won't change much
- There's no ongoing work after launch
- You'd rather pay per project than per month
We take fixed-scope projects too.
Tell us about your projectChoose an in-house team
- Software is your core product for years to come
- You need more people full time than a tier provides
- You want the knowledge inside the company, and can carry the cost of hiring
